Penda was founded in 2014 by our general manager Marie Nielsen with a clear purpose in mind; to revolutionise Addis Ababa’s paper recycling industry and showcase the “power of paper”. The result was a company founded on the following three goals: 1. To build a sustainable circular economy for paper and carton waste in Ethiopia 2. To create 10,000 job and income opportunities in recycling 3. To contribute to making Ethiopia a green middle-income country by 2025 After conducting a small pilot project for waste paper collection in the capital, Penda signed a Public Private Partnership agreement with the Addis Ababa City Administration in June 2015. The role of Penda under the 20-year PPP agreement is to develop and set up a best practice system for waste paper/carton collection in the city for recycling and prevent (as far as possible) the current practice of burning and/or dumping recyclable materials at the landfill. Our accomplishment to date: - 90+ fulltime jobs created - 4,500 m3 of landfill space saved - 4,300 government waste collectors are earning additional income - 170+ offices are participating in our recycling program - 512,610 children in 810 schools are educated on the benefits of recycling
